Electoral district of Wright

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Wright is an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the Australian state of South Australia. Named after the 19th century South Australian architect Edmund Wright, it is a 21.2km² urban electorate in Adelaide’s outer north-eastern suburbs, taking in the suburb of Salisbury East and parts of Salisbury Heights, Greenwith, Golden Grove, Gulfview Heights and Wynn Vale.

Wright was created in the 1991 electoral distribution as a safe seat for the Australian Labor Party. It was first contested at the 1993 state election, where it was won by Liberal candidate Scott Ashenden as part of a large swing throughout the state. However, he was swept away in 1997, with Jennifer Rankine reclaiming the seat for Labor. Rankine retained the seat in 2002, with a slender margin of 3.2 percent.

Dossier

Monday, November 17th, 2008

A dossier is typically a briefing paper based on an individual of interest in police or intelligence circles. They generally contain a relevant biography, most current information on activities and any special information of interest to the agency, such as having training in various specialized fields i.e. (assassination techniques or money laundering contacts). When the target in question has retired or died, or is of no further interest, the dossier is generally filed away for reference. If the information contained inside, or the identity of the person is too sensitive, the dossier is destroyed along with all records of it.

Daniel Lewis Williams

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Daniel Lewis Williams is an American operatic basso profundo.

Williams grew up in Billings, Montana and appeared in operas and concerts as boy soprano in the Western United States. After his voice changed, he appeared frequently in musicals and won the International Kiwanis Talent Contest in New York City at 17 for his performance of “Ol’ Man River” from Show Boat. He graduated with a B.A. in theater from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He continued his studies at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Munich, Germany, studying with Ernst Haefliger, Kurt Böhme, and Kurt Moll.

He began his professional career with the Trier, Germany opera, with regular engagements with the Landestheater in Kiel and the theater in Krefeld. In 1989, he became the regular bass at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf.

He has had a far-flung international career, appearing in many of the major opera houses of Europe and the United States, as well as in Japan. His signature roles are Baron Ochs von Lerchenau in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier (a role that he has performed in over 22 productions all over the world), Sarastro in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and King Philip in Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlos, but he sings many roles that are rarely attempted by other basses because of his tremendous range. He has recently added Strauss’s Die schweigsame Frau to his repertoire, and in June 2005, he sang in a production of Strauss’s Daphne in La Fenice theater in Venice, Italy with June Anderson.

He appears on a DVD of Rosenkavalier recorded live at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo which is in general distribution. He has also recorded a CD with his daughter Judith Williams, a presenter on the German shopping channel, called Träume. This CD is available on the shopping channel, but is not yet in general distribution.

Personal life

Williams is married to the former Gaye Hicks, and they have three daughters. They live in Konz, near Trier, Germany.

Whispering gallery

Monday, November 17th, 2008

A whispering gallery is a gallery beneath a dome or vault or enclosed in a circular or elliptical area in which whispers can be heard clearly in other parts of the building.

A whispering gallery is usually constructed in the form of an ellipsoid, with an accessible point at each focus. When a visitor stands at one focus and whispers, the line of sound emanating from this focus reflects directly to the dish/focus at the other end of the room, and to the other person. Circular whispering galleries may provide “communication” from any part on the circumference to the diametrically-opposite point on the circumference.

  • The rotundas of the Texas State Capitol and the Missouri State Capitol.
  • Martello towers

Whispering galleries also occur naturally in the ocean. Instead of the reflecting surface it is the sound rays that are curved and the reflecting ‘wall’ (the sea surface) is flat. The same phenomenon occurs for radio waves propagating in the atmosphere.

Caltech in the US has been doing research on optical whispering galleries, which so far are no bigger than 40 micrometres in diameter, and must be filtered to be seen.
